Types of Operating Systems in Computers

This article will discuss one example of an operating system on a computer along with an explanation.

There are at least four categories of operating systems that are usually used as operating systems on a computer device.

The four operating system categories will be explained in this article, so look at the explanation carefully.

Types of Operating Systems in Computers

The operating system is software that is on the hard disk with the function of managing hardware and software or software in it.

An operating system on a computer device is needed.

Operating system

The operating system has various functions consisting of:

1. Coordinators

It is an operating system that can be coordinated and provides various facilities so that complex activities can be managed and can be processed sequentially on computer devices.

2. Guardians

It is an operating system that provides access control with the function of protecting documents and providing oversight of the data and programs in it.

3. Gate keepers

Useful as access controllers by computer users by controlling who has the right to enter the system and monitoring what these users do.

4. Accountants

Function to set CPU time, memory usage, calls, disk storage, and terminal connection time.

5. Servers

Useful for serving computer users.

Operating System Category

One example of an operating system on a computer is a stand alone operating system and many more which will be explained below.

1. Stand-alone operating system

This system is a stand-alone system and can be used by both single users and multiple users.

School cooperatives have certain features in each type and are a type of operating system category used by computer devices that we usually use today.

2. Network operating system

As the name implies, a network operating system is a type of operating system that functions to operate a computer for network needs.

This means that each computer device has its own network operating system and is capable of operating a computer as a network server or workstation in a computer network.

3. Embedded operating system

One example of an operating system on a computer is an embedded operating system, which is a version of several types of computer operating systems, one of which is a desktop computer.

Embedded operations are applied to smaller computer devices and are closely related to computer operating systems on smart phones, either developing their own computer operations or indeed operations that are deliberately made specifically for smart phones only.

4. Live CD operating system

One example of an operating system on a computer is this type which allows each user to operate a computer using a CD or other compact storage device.

It can be in the form of a diskette or flash drive.

This system has a light resource capacity and is easy to use, but this operating system has limited and incomplete features compared to other operating systems in general.

Examples of computer operating systems

1. Microsoft Windows

One example of an operating system on a computer is the most frequently used Microsoft Windows.

Windows is the result of the development of Microsoft DOS which is supported by GUI features.

Windows first published its operating system product called Very 1.0.

Products released by Windows have developed very rapidly, even now they have entered the final development stage, namely Windows version 10.0.

Microsoft Windows consists of two categories of operating systems, namely stand-alone operating systems and network operating systems.

For a stand-alone operating system, Windows has several developments from previous popular operating systems including:

  • Windows 1.0

  • Windows 2.0

  • Windows 3.0

  • Windows 3.1 or Janus

  • Windows 95 or Chicago

  • Windows 98 or Memphis

  • Windows Millennium edition

  • Windows NT 3.1

  • Windows NT 3.5 or Daytona

  • Windows 200 or Windows NT 5.0

  • WindowsXP

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows 7

  • Windows 8

  • Windows 8.1

  • Windows 10

The entire stand-alone operating system developed by Microsoft Office that has been mentioned above is a development from the beginning until now.

As previously explained, it was stated that Windows 10 is the last generation of the Windows operating system and is claimed to have advantages and features that are different and interesting than the previous features.

2. Linux operating system

Linux is an open source or open operating system whose programming source code can be changed and modified according to what the user wants.

Compared to other operating systems such as Windows or Mac, Linux users are only charged a much more economical price.

Minus has advantages unlike other operating systems, because it doesn't require a large memory for the operating system and can be installed on other operating systems.

If you want to have an authentic operating system, you can choose to use Linux.

Even though we want Linux operations to be easy to operate, Linux is less popular than Windows or Mac.

Linux gives freedom for developers to develop their own Linux-based operating system.

This led to the existence of several types of Linux Distros developed in order to create their own operating system development including:

  • Red hat

  • Debian

  • Slackware

  • SuSE

  • Mandrake

  • Winlinx

And many more Linux Distros according to their specifications.

3. Mac OS operating system

One example of an operating system on a computer is the Mac OS operating system.

Mac OS is a product of Machintos or the Apple company which is the first operating system to use and introduce a graphical user interface (GUI) system before any other operating system exists.

Mac OS has advantages such as:

  • Very high level of security compared to other operating systems.

  • The protection system of Mac OS is unmatched compared to other operating systems.

  • Mac OS display and graphics are of very high quality and attractive.

  • This type of operation is very popular and is able to compete with the top popularity of the Windows operating system.

The following is a list of Mac OS development operating systems including:

  • Mac OS system 1

  • Mac OS system 2

  • Mac OS system 3

  • Mac OS system 4

  • Mac OS system 5

  • Mac OS system 6

  • Mac OS system 7

  • Mac OS system 8

  • Mac OS system 9

  • Mac OS system X/10

Until now, Mac OS X is still being developed for service products from computers offered by Apple Inc.
